Sridevi.... too young to leave!

The whole nation is in a state of shock. Sunday came with not-so-good-a-morning. The news of the sudden demise of the female superstar of Bollywood. The first instinct of most of us was: this is definitely a hoax. And we started searching the Internet frantically for some respite. I turned to the most trusted site, the Wikipedia, which read... Sridevi Kapoor WAS an Indian actress...! It felt like someone close to me had departed. This is the power of the film and entertainment industry. The film stars and their lives influence us in many ways, big and small. They are in the eyes of public 24X7. Their on and off screen presence is under continuous scrutiny.

But, nothing prepares us for this. Sridevi’s huge fanbase, around the world,  is mourning. My heart goes out to her two daughters, most of all. The most crucial time in life, when one needs a mother the most. What hopes and dreams! All left hanging. I got more emotional when I saw the Filmfare Awards that was being aired tonight. Just that one familiar face will be missed forever.

Where we have the fraternity and fans out in support of this legendary actress, we do have a few negative comments, also. Even I indulged in discussing her life. I am sure most of us would have done that, today, of all days. It brought me no cheer, though. What she did in her personal life was her choice. Since we haven’t walked in her shoes, we don’t have the right to judge, either. Whether it is about her marriages or her surgeries or her extravagant lifestyle... I say we, as audience, should remember her versatility and acting prowess, may it be her perfect comic timing-who can forget Chaalbaaz or Mr. India, her intense portrayals right from her first movie, Sadma to Lamhe to her latest, Mom, her iconic dance in Hawa Hawai, her poetic beauty in Khuda Gawah or her breathtaking screen presence in the romantic Chandni!  She is the prettiest ‘Icchhadhaari Nagin’ that can be, I say!

She is probably the only actress to have made a successful comeback. English Vinglish saw her in a very endearing role of a struggling housewife. Now, it feels like we didn’t get enough of her. Even though she has worked for five decades entertaining us, it seems like we have missed out on a lot. She had so much more to offer. Last, but not the least, she always turned up looking like a billion bucks with her impeccable dressing sense.

May her soul rest in peace. May her family and friends get the strength to cope up with this immensely huge loss. We can’t wait for her last screen appearance, even though it is just a cameo, in SRK’s next movie.

She was too young to leave. It makes us re-evaluate life. Even the rich and mighty aren’t spared by fate. God bless!
